New Versus Traditional Terrorism Similarities and...

Pantha rei Ââ€" as it was stated by the Greek philosopher, Heraclites of Ephesus (sixth and fifth centuries B.C.) Ââ€" everything flows, everything changes. Change in the contemporary world is an extremely fast process. Nothing remains the same as it was in the past. In political science especially, some notions (e.g. sovereignty) demand redefinition. The changing nature of all things also includes the political concept of terrorism. The official approach to this changing terrorism is rather complicated. The terrorist of yesterday is the hero of today, and the hero of yesterday becomes the terrorist of today . There is then a great need to know what contemporary terrorism is and what it is not. Terrorism is a calculated use of power to†¦show more content†¦The terrorists do not perceive themselves as terrorists. They simultaneously refuse to be bound by rules of warfare and codes of conducting a conflict. They are also a fundamental altruists who believe that they serve a good cause designed to achieve greater good for a wider constituency - whether real or imagined - which the terrorist and his organization purport to represent, This is true because a terrorist without a cause is not a terrorist, as Konrad Kellen said. The terrorist is a fundamentally violent intellectual prepared to use, and indeed committed to using, force in the attainment of his goals. Like twentieth century totalitarians, todays Islamic fundamentalist fanatics are convinced that they posses absolute truth. This truth is immune from refutation or criticism. They believe that force and terror are necessary to establish a utopia in place of the current decadent and corrupt world. Unlike the followers from the past centuries, todays terrorists draw inspiration from religious radicalism. Therefore religion marks the clearest difference from the old terrorism. Now the need to be heard is not only an expression of anger, feeling helpless, and alone, as we can observe jihad as an international violent phenomenon fulfilling the gap in absence of revolutionary ideology. Modern terrorists see violence as an end in itself.Show MoreRelatedContemporary Issue in Eastern Religions1627 Words   |  7 PagesElias, Jonah, John the Baptist, and Jesus, peace be upon them. Biometric Systems Essay Example For Students

Biometric Systems Essay Biometric SystemsAs defined in Computer Security Basics by OReilly ; Associates, Inc. Biometrics is the use of a persons unique physiological, behavioral, andmorphological characteristics to provide positive personal identification. Biometric systems that are currently avaiable today examine fingerprints, handprints, and retina patterns. Systems that are close to biometrics but arenot classified as such are behavioral systems such as voice, signature andkeystroke systems. They test patterns of behavior not parts of the body. It seems that in the world of biometrics that the more effective thedevice, the less willing people will be to accept it. Retina pattern devicesare the most reliable but most people hate the idea of a laser shooting intotheir eye. Yet something such as monitoring keystroke patters people dont mind, but its not nearly as effective. Biometric verification is forecast to be a multibillion dollar market inthis decade. There is no doubt that financial credit and debit cards are goingto be the biggest part of the biometric market. There are also manysignificant niche markets which are growing rapidly. For example, biometricidentification cards are being used at a university in Georgia to allow studentsto get their meals, and in a Maryland day care center to ensure that the rightperson picks up the right child. In Los Angeles, they are using fingerprints tostop welfare fraud. And theyre also being used by frequent business travellersfor rapid transit through immigration and customs in Holland, and now at JFK andNewark airports in the United States. It could also be used to simply preventone employee from punching in for some one else, or to prevent someone fromopening up an account at a bank using a false name. Then there is also thesecurity access market, access to computer databases, to premises and a varietyof oth er areas. The Sentry program made by Fingerprint Technologies uses several devicesat once. The system first prompts for a user name and password. Then they musthave their fingerprint scan match what is on record. They can also use a videocamera for real time video to capture photographs which can be incorporated intothe data base. The time to scan and gain entrance to the building take from 6to 10 seconds depending on what other information the operator wishes the userto enter. The system also keeps on record three of the individuals fingerpatterns incase one of the others is injured. Biometrics is still relatively new to most people and will remainexpensive to purchase good equipment until it becomes more popular and thetechnology gets better. And as people become more aware of how the systems workthey will become more accepting of the more secure systems and not shy away fromthem as much. The future of access control security is literally in the hands, eyes, voice, keystroke, and signature of everyone. Computers and Internet

Pairnoia Essays - Pictures Of Spaceships, Alien Invasion

Pairnoia Most people believe that the first REAL proof of alien invasion was that associated with Roswell, New Mexico, but some people believe differently. Since the earliest man learned to paint, there have been pictures of spaceships and rockets on cave walls. These flying objects have supposedly brought the message that the world will end in the year 2000, but the same end of the world chaos was experienced just before the year 1000 as well. Irrelevance, however, sets in when we come to terms with the fact (as Jean Donnely would tell us) that according to the Israelites, it is one thousand, nine hundred and ninety seven years anno domini, when in reality it is a scam, and time is at least three years off anyway. So the big question that is aroused is...Does anybody care Death is inevitable, and weather it comes naturally, with emphysema, AIDS, or the end of the world, or even by means of alien abduction is irrelevant. One then cant help but be lead to believe (By Isaac Asmiov) that the real question amounts to: DO MOTHS ACTUALLY EAT THE CLOTH, OR ARE THEY JUST TRYING TO FIND THEIR WAY THROUGH?...Which sparks further interest: are moths blind? Each answer seems to rely arabesquely on the next, and it seems that if one answer were slightly miscalculated, that the whole process of human embodiment would cease to exist. For instance, if moths are blind, then why are they so drawn to the light on the other side of the cloth? Or if indeed they can see, then why don't they just fly right around? This further drives thoughts into the theory that our ?pinkie? fingers are getting smaller with evolution and will eventually lack presence, as will happen alike with every other feature of our physical body. This process will leave us in Einstein's hypothetical pinnacle-of-evolution or as the most advanced spices...a giant ball of energy with no bodies. So does Evolution really even exist? I plan on self termination before the day I care to find the answer to these unknown, leaving you back towards the beginning...Does anybody care?...NO!
